Binge Drinking & Weekend Drinking

When the weekend becomes the problem.

Monday to Thursday, you’re fine. No drink crosses your mind, no urge, nothing to manage. Then Friday arrives, and something shifts — the weekend becomes almost entirely built around drinking, without you quite deciding it would be. Because it’s not daily, it’s easy to tell yourself it isn’t really a problem. But the pattern itself, and what it costs you every single week, is worth taking seriously regardless of how many days it touches.

I’m Darren, and helping people address this specific pattern — where the week is completely fine but the weekend has been quietly taken over — is exactly the kind of work I do. The shift doesn’t have to be permanent.

Does This Sound Familiar?

If any of these sound familiar, you’re exactly the kind of person I work with every week:

  • Being genuinely fine Monday to Thursday, then losing control from Friday
  • Justifying it as “normal” because it’s not an everyday habit
  • Weekends built entirely around drinking without quite deciding they would be
  • The specific exhaustion of “recovering” every Sunday
  • Noticing the pattern is getting slightly bigger each week, even if it’s still weekend-only
  • So your weekends can genuinely be yours again — calm, clear-headed and back in control

How Recovery From Binge and Weekend Drinking Works

A practical, personalised process built entirely around you.

1

Understand the pattern

We identify exactly what shifts for you between the week and the weekend — specific triggers, routines, or permissions you give yourself — so the work is built around your actual pattern, not a generic one.

2

Break the cycle

Using hypnotherapy, we work with the automatic shift into weekend drinking mode directly, so Friday doesn’t automatically mean losing control.

3

Build weekends that don’t need to revolve around drinking

Recovery here means the weekend genuinely feeling like your own again — not something drinking has quietly taken over.

After you book

Everything is confirmed by email and there’s nothing to prepare. You can choose in-person in Wokingham or online from home.

In the consultation

Learn More About Binge & Weekend Drinking

Binge drinking is often dismissed because it isn’t daily. But “not daily” doesn’t mean not a problem — it means the problem has a different structure. The pattern can carry real health risks, and it tends to expand quietly over time rather than staying neatly weekend-only. If you’ve noticed the edges getting slightly wider each month, that’s the pattern growing rather than holding.

See also: Alcohol Cravings for more on the pull that drives each drink, and Alcohol Recovery Timeline for what change looks like once the work begins.

The shift into weekend drinking mode is usually driven by a feeling of permission that weekdays don’t carry. The week is over. The rules are different. That sense of “Friday means drinking” can become a deeply automatic association — so automatic that it doesn’t require a difficult day or a specific trigger to activate. It just arrives, because it’s Friday.

Add social context, accumulated week-stress, and years of established routine, and the pattern can feel almost inevitable once it starts. See also Alcohol and Anxiety if stress is a significant part of the equation for you.

Hypnotherapy works with the automatic part of the pattern — the subconscious association between “Friday” and “drinking heavily” — rather than trying to override it with willpower. This is why willpower tends to fail: you’re fighting an automatic response with a conscious one, and the automatic response usually wins once the environment activates it.

In sessions, we identify the specific structure driving your weekend shift and work directly with the subconscious cue. The goal is that drinking becomes a genuine choice again rather than something that simply runs on schedule. More on staying alcohol-free for what happens after the pattern changes.

Each session package includes dedicated e-guides designed to support the hypnotherapy work in the days between sessions — including the specific stretch between booking and the weekend arriving. They cover the themes addressed in each session: recognising the automatic shift, understanding the weekend permission mindset, and building a different relationship with Friday. Written for this work specifically, not generic self-help material.

The 3-session package includes three guides (worth £225 total); the 4-session package includes four (worth £300 total). Delivered digitally and yours to keep.

Registered with the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR) and the National Hypnotherapy Society, a UK Accredited Register recognised by the Professional Standards Authority. Full professional insurance is in place. All sessions are completely confidential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions people most often ask before getting in touch.

It can be. The frequency isn’t the only measure that matters — if the pattern is escalating, affecting your health, or costing you more than you’re comfortable with, it’s worth addressing regardless of how many days it touches.
Binge patterns often involve a sudden shift — from complete control during the week to little control at the weekend — which can feel confusing because it doesn’t match the more familiar picture of daily dependency.
Yes. The work addresses the underlying shift and triggers driving the weekend pattern specifically, which doesn’t require daily drinking to be a genuine, addressable pattern.
There’s no single number that applies to everyone — what matters more is whether the pattern feels outside your control, or is affecting your health, relationships, or how you feel about yourself.
For some people the pattern can gradually extend; for others it stays weekend-specific indefinitely. Either way, addressing it now is worth doing rather than waiting to see which direction it goes.
Most clients see meaningful change within three to four sessions — the same general timeframe as other alcohol-related patterns. See the Alcohol Recovery Timeline for more on what that progress looks like week by week.
