My Story
I didn't start in a therapy room. I started at a drawing board.
From 1989 I worked as a draughtsman and trained in architecture, before moving into the corporate world in 1996, where I spent the next twenty-two years, working my way up into management. Nearly three decades in professional life taught me a great deal — and the thing it taught me most thoroughly was what sustained pressure does to people.
I watched capable, hard-working colleagues quietly buckle under stress and anxiety. And I understood it better than most, because I'd lived it myself: I know anxiety from the inside, and many years ago I fought — and won — my own battle with anxiety and addiction. So when I started noticing people struggling, and the changes in their behaviour, I didn't just sympathise. I recognised it.
That's how the helping started. From 2016 I trained in counselling skills and human behaviour, and found myself mentoring and supporting the people around me — and discovered that this work, not the corporate ladder, was what I actually wanted to dedicate my time to. In 2017 I trained in clinical hypnotherapy with Chrysalis, one of the UK's most established training providers, qualified, and in 2018 opened Darren Carter Hypnotherapy at Markham House, Wokingham — where the practice has been ever since.
I haven't stopped studying since. In 2025 I completed my Diploma in Advanced Hypnotherapy and brought together everything I'd refined across thousands of sessions into a named framework: The Darren Carter Method™.
