My Story

I didn't start in a therapy room. I started at a drawing board.

From 1989 I worked as a draughtsman and trained in architecture, before moving into the corporate world in 1996, where I spent the next twenty-two years, working my way up into management. Nearly three decades in professional life taught me a great deal — and the thing it taught me most thoroughly was what sustained pressure does to people.

I watched capable, hard-working colleagues quietly buckle under stress and anxiety. And I understood it better than most, because I'd lived it myself: I know anxiety from the inside, and many years ago I fought — and won — my own battle with anxiety and addiction. So when I started noticing people struggling, and the changes in their behaviour, I didn't just sympathise. I recognised it.

That's how the helping started. From 2016 I trained in counselling skills and human behaviour, and found myself mentoring and supporting the people around me — and discovered that this work, not the corporate ladder, was what I actually wanted to dedicate my time to. In 2017 I trained in clinical hypnotherapy with Chrysalis, one of the UK's most established training providers, qualified, and in 2018 opened Darren Carter Hypnotherapy at Markham House, Wokingham — where the practice has been ever since.

I haven't stopped studying since. In 2025 I completed my Diploma in Advanced Hypnotherapy and brought together everything I'd refined across thousands of sessions into a named framework: The Darren Carter Method™.

Why Anxiety and Addiction?

Most hypnotherapists are generalists. I deliberately am not.

Anxiety and addiction are my specialisms because they're the two struggles I know from both sides of the chair. I've felt anxiety's grip personally, and I've broken an addiction of my own — long ago now, but you don't forget the fight. When a client sits across from me and says "you don't understand what this is like," I can honestly reply that I do.

The two are also more connected than most people realise: a great deal of addiction is anxiety wearing a disguise, and a great deal of anxiety deepens when the coping habit takes hold. Specialising in both means I treat the whole pattern, not half of it.

My understanding of addiction has been deeply shaped by the work of Dr Gabor Maté, whose books I've read and studied in full — a compassionate, trauma-aware view of addiction as a response to pain rather than a moral failing. It's a perspective you'll feel in how I work, even if you never hear me name it.

My Clinical Approach — The Darren Carter Method™

Everything I do rests on a few firm beliefs, refined across thousands of sessions.

Root cause, not symptom management

Lasting change means working where the pattern actually lives — the subconscious — rather than teaching you to white-knuckle the surface.

No generic scripts. Ever.

Every session is built uniquely for you: shaped by your consultation, by what's shifted between sessions, and by the focus we agree together. The Darren Carter Method™ brings together a set of clinical approaches refined across thousands of sessions — assembled differently for every client, because no two patterns are the same.

Longer sessions, deliberately

Most hypnotherapy sessions run 35–50 minutes. Mine are 90, including around 60 minutes of hypnosis — with the remaining time spent understanding what's changed since last time, so each session builds on the last rather than starting again. Deep work needs room.

Support between sessions

Session packages include supporting recordings and guides to reinforce the work between appointments, plus simple self-hypnosis skills you keep for life.

Honesty first

It all begins with a free phone consultation — and if I don't believe hypnotherapy is the right route for you, I'll tell you and point you toward what is.

You can read a plain-English explanation of how this all works on my guide to what clinical hypnotherapy actually is, and the published evidence behind it in does hypnotherapy work for anxiety?

Qualifications, Training and Continuing Development

I believe the people I help deserve a practitioner who never stops learning. My core qualifications:

  • Diploma in Advanced Hypnotherapy (2025) — GHR-accredited
  • AIM Award in Hypnotherapy & Counselling Skills
  • Certificate in Hypnotherapy & Counselling Skills (CERT. HYP CS) — Chrysalis
  • Hypno-Gastric Band Registered Practitioner — HSOH
  • Smoking Cessation Practitioner — HSOH

Continuous professional development is a permanent part of my clinical practice. Every year I continue studying so clients benefit from current best practice — my CPD record includes anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction, stress management, hypnotherapy regression, quit smoking and vaping, weight management and emotional eating, eating disorders, dental phobias and medical anxiety, insomnia and sleep disorders, IBS and gut health, pain management, and hypno-oncology.

My current study goes deep into the trauma-informed end of the field: I'm presently working through advanced professional training with several of the world's leading trauma clinicians and approaches, covering the mind-body connection, substance use treatment and the neuroscience of anxiety. It feeds directly into how I work — though the specifics of how it all comes together stay in the therapy room, where they belong.

Registrations, Insurance and Standards

You should be able to verify any practitioner you trust with your mind. Here's where you can verify me:

I hold full professional indemnity insurance and an enhanced DBS check, and I work with adults and with children and teenagers.

But I'll be honest with you: the recognition I value most is the 134+ five-star reviews written by the people who actually sat in the chair.

Why Clients Choose Me

Because the sessions are longer and deeper than the industry standard. Because nothing is off-the-shelf — your pattern, your language, your session. Because the experience is real: thousands of sessions across more than a decade of helping people — since 2016 — focused on anxiety and addiction rather than spread thin across everything. Because I've been where many of my clients are, and there is no judgement in my practice — none. And because I'll always tell you the truth, including when hypnotherapy isn't the answer.

Away From the Practice

When I'm not working, you'll usually find me on a motorbike, behind a camera, at the beach, or walking my dog — and I've never quite lost the draughtsman's love of architecture and good design. The drive to help people is the thread that runs through all of it; the rest keeps me human.

Yes — GHR registered, a member of the National Hypnotherapy Society, fully insured, with an enhanced DBS check. All registrations are linked above so you can verify them directly.
Do you work with children and teenagers?
Yes, alongside my adult practice — anxiety in young people is an area of growing need, and sessions are adapted accordingly.
What can you help with?
My core specialisms are anxiety and addiction, and I also help with panic attacks, fears and phobias, and unwanted habits such as smoking and emotional eating. If you're not sure whether I'm the right fit for your situation, the free consultation is the place to ask.
Where are you based, and do you offer online sessions?
My practice is at Markham House in Wokingham town centre, and I also work online with clients right across the UK — the same structure, recordings and results, from wherever you are.
